There was trouble for Alberto Tomba following a World Cup race in Alta Badia, Italy, yesterday when he clashed angrily with a photographer who sold nude photographs of him taken in a sauna in to a magazine last summer. Photographers said Tomba, who had finished third in a giant slalom, threw a bottle of wine at Aldo Martinuzzi and then during the podium ceremony aimed a glass trophy at him, which cut Martinuzzi on the hand. He said he was considering taking legal action against Tomba. Tomba , an officer in the carabinieri police , insisted afterwards that he was merely throwing the bottle in the air as he has done before and that he had thrown the trophy to his sister in the crowd.

Bolzano police are looking into the Sunday tiff between Tomba and the free-lance photographer, Aldo Martinuzzi, who has been on difficult terms with Tomba since he circulated nude photos of the World Cup champion last summer. Police reviewed television footage and said it appeared Tomba intentionally tossed the crystal cup at Martinuzzi, but no charges were immediately filed. Martinuzzi said he suffered a cut in his right forefinger and a minor shoulder bruise. In Milan, he filed a deliberate assault suit against Tomba.
It is the third World Cup slalom event of the current campaign, but the first in which Tomba, injured at his Passeo di Tonale training camp in a fall on October 28th, will ski. The season has started quietly. It is as if it has been waiting for him. Tomba is not the strong, silent type. As iron filings find a magnet, so Tomba will land in the spotlight.
